Florida and FMCSA

Florida Commercial Truck Insurance Requirements

Florida state law requires local truck drivers and new ventures to keep a certain amount of liability insurance. The amount you need is determined by the freight you pull and where you haul it. If you don’t cross state lines and your truck is over 26,000 GVW, you must get an intrastate-only USDOT Number and be insured up to the following levels:

$1,000,000Liability Insurance (Oil Transport)
$5,000,000Liability Insurance (Hazmat)
$300,000Liability Insurance (Household Goods)
$750,000Liability Insurance (General Freight)

The insurance requirements for truck drivers who travel out-of-state are more detailed. In addition to the above, you must be in compliance with all FMCSA DOT truck insurance requirements. Both Florida and the FMCSA require certain filings to be submitted by your insurance broker. Your insurance agent or insurance company should take care of these filings for you. These forms show the government that all of your semi-truck insurance requirements are fulfilled. They must be submitted before you can receive your authority. Some common forms include:

Form E
Form H
The BMC-92
Form MCS-91

No two trucking companies are alike. Whether you’re a new venture, a local or long hauler, a fleet manager or a leased owner operator, your policy must be catered specifically to your needs.
